About Working Memory

Working memory is essential for controlling attention. We have to remember what it is we are to concentrate on.

— The Overflowing Brain, Torkel Klingberg

A

critical component of attention management is a well-developed working memory. It stands to reason, therefore, that improving working memory capacity can improve attention management. An optional complement to my coaching process is a highly effective working memory improvement program called Cogmed Working Memory Training. Of the many programs available in the cognitive training or “brain fitness” arena, Cogmed has demonstrated significant, well-researched, and documented results. The following information explains Cogmed Working Memory Training in more detail.

The ability to hold, manipulate, and use information

Working memory is the ability to momentarily hold, manipulate, and use information effectively in the thought process. It facilitates complex cognitive abilities, such as comprehension, learning, and reasoning. In addition, working memory is essential to attention management. Strong working memory increases the ability to concentrate on the task at hand in spite of potential distractions.

Training Improves Working Memory

Recent cognitive neuroscience research has established that working memory, long thought to be an immutable characteristic of the brain, can in fact be changed for the better through specialized training. Cogmed Working Memory Training is a program specifically designed to train working memory. Studies show that over 80% of those who complete Cogmed enhance their working memory and experience improved attention management. These same studies point to additional measurable and lasting performance gains at work, school, and home.

Benefits of Cogmed Working Memory Training

Successful professionals can leverage strong working memory to better prioritize activities and maintain effective attention in high level, distracting environments. They can capitalize on strong working memory to excel under pressure, multitask effectively, and make optimal use of their time in the face of many competing demands.

Computer and Web based adaptive software

Cogmed Working Memory Training is a computer and Web based, adaptive software program designed for use in the convenience of home or office. The program includes 25 training sessions lasting 30 minutes each, to be completed within six weeks. Participants consult weekly by phone with a Cogmed coach who provides support and guidance to optimize the training on a personal level. Participants can track their progress on the Cogmed Training Web site.

In addition to my other coaching credentials, I am qualified as a Cogmed coach in affiliation with licensed Cogmed Practitioner, Avner Stern, Ph.D. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about Cogmed Working Memory Training.
